Today, I want to talk about my routine for RTI small group instruction. I found myself becoming exhausted from the hours spent on creating and laminating materials, yet not seeing the level of growth I had hoped for in my students.

My school has adopted the UFLI routine and while I love this book, I found that it does not match up with our phonics instruction (Benchmark Advance). There are several lessons like blends that UFLI did not have in the book. I also do not like flipping back in forth and I needed a 4-to-5-day routine, while UFLI is more of a two-day plan. Now I am not saying that I am an expert by any means, but I found that this new routine has been growing my students and I am not spending hours coming up with another lesson plan and activities for small group. We follow this routine week by week!

Side note: This will follow my Benchmark Phoncis Scope (Below you can see the teacher copy as well as student copy)

Today I will introduce our new skill and sight words. I start every day with students reading the sight words on the top of the page. Then we will “race write” our word of the day. I start a timer for 1 minute and they write the sight word as many times as they can.

Next, we use our pencil to “tap” out the word I say – ex: sway – students will tap with eraser in the circles on their page s-w-ay.

The next step is segmenting with our new skill. Students will listen to the word I say and then spell it in the boxes. Ex. – The teacher will say the word brain. Students will then sound it out on their own and put the sounds in the Elkonin boxes. With skills like ai and ay it really helps them to start remembering the rule of ay at the end of words.

After this we work on our visual drill. This section will change daily, so that students are practicing multiple letter/letters sounds throughout the week. (This is one of my favorite parts, I was wasting so much time typing this our and laminating into cards! I love having all of this in one place and all I have to do is print it!)

Now we move on to our Auditory Drill. I will say the sound and students will write what letter/s make the sound. This also changes daily, so we can practice more throughout the week.

And now we practice reading words with our skill. I like to have them underline what we are working on before we start reading the words.

Today I also try to have each student read a story with our new skill for 1 minute each. I log this daily, so they can see their growth.

The bottom part of the page is where things change. On day 1 we work on the below. I will say a word and students will spell it on their blanks. Keep reading to see days 2-4 practice!

If time permits, we then continue to this worksheet after our 1-minute read. (sometimes, I will have them work on it without me while students work on 1 minute read) Students will use a highlighter to find all of the “skill” words. They will then pick one of their highlighted words and write a sentence with it. They also highlight the skill in each word in the boxes at the bottom. They can then go to their desk to draw a picture to match the story.

On day 2 we follow the routine as mentioned above. When completed we will then practice writing a sentence and then use our word builders to practice building the words. (sometimes I use expo markers instead of word builders, just to switch things up)

If time permits, we then continue to this worksheet after our 1-minute read. We read the story together to work on fluency. Students then answer the comprehension questions. They can draw picture to match sentence at their desk.

On day 3 we follow the routine as mentioned above, excluding the auditory drill. When completed we will then practice writing 3 sentences and then practice building words.

Today we will work on sequence of events. We will practice fluency reading the story and then students can take it to their desk to cut and paste items in order.

We continue routine, excluding the auditory drill and we will write sentences again instead of just words. Then we will work on building words with word builders.

There is not a second worksheet for this day, so sometimes I will challenge students to create their own sentences using a word or words with our skill.

My school does progress monitoring on Friday, so I do not have a lesson plan for today. However, any of the worksheets that were not completed can be completed at this time!

That is it! My whole week routine! I love it! I feel like small groups have gone much smoother and I am not as stressed about plans, I simply put “RTI Routine” in my planbook now, because everything I need is right there in my teacher packet! I am still making these as the school year progresses, but you can click on the images below to be taken to my TPT store to purchase them! Get ai/ay for free, just for reading this post!
